The Homepage is Dead. Long Live the Product Detail Page
•
The holiday shopping season can feel a bit like Game of Thrones for brands. It’s a battle to stand out amongst competitors and convert consumers when the stakes are the highest.
So in that spirit, we have an announcement to make: the homepage is dead. The king is the product detail page (PDP). Long live the PDP.
The homepage has been declining in importance for a while now as search behaviors are changing with AI and new methods of discovery. These changes are amplified during the holiday season. And it makes the product detail page the most important template on your site and also your biggest entry point.
Which is why doing it right should be a top priority.
Straight to the Source
When we say the homepage is dead and has been replaced by the PDP, this is what we mean. Yottaa’s research during the five-day span from Black Friday through Giving Tuesday last year found that only 4.8% of all search sessions began on a homepage. Instead, more than 60% went to a PDP and another 33% to a category page.
Why is this happening? There’s not just one reason. Here are a few of the biggest.
AI Product Discovery
Instead of a search engine, more and more people are using large language models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. AI drove 693% more traffic during the 2025 holiday season than it did in 2024. And that same Yottaa research found that more than 75% of those searches led people straight to a PDP page.
Non-Search Channels
Google and ChatGPT aren’t the only places consumers discover products. Social commerce and email marketing are huge all the time, but especially during the holidays. And the focus of brand emails and social posts are specific products themselves (if not categories). Instagram and TikTok use product tags that link directly to a product. And emails are generally tailored enough to the sender to focus on just one or a select few products.
Gifts and Gift Guides
More than 70% of Americans’ budgets are dedicated to purchasing gifts for others. And that process rarely involves someone going to a homepage and surfing a site from there. Whether a buyer receives a list of items with links from a family member or friend, or they search a gift guide for inspiration, most roads lead to a specific PDP.
What an Optimized Product Detail Page Looks Like
Let’s start with the obvious. Your PDPs should be consistently optimized all year long. And regardless of the time of year, there are a handful of areas to start with to make sure they’re always performing well.
High-Res Imagery
A customer should never buy a product and then be surprised by its appearance once it arrives. Include a handful of high-definition pictures from a number of angles and settings (for example, if it’s clothing, show how it looks on real people). Video and AR are also a worthwhile investment. Provide as many options for them to experience the product in their everyday surroundings as you can.
Don’t Skimp on the Specs
They’re called product detail pages for a reason. Consumers do quite a bit of research before making the purchase, so make it easy on them. Sizes, the materials, and any other details that are impactful to the decision should be front and center.
Make Ratings and Reviews Easy to Find
People trust other people (and especially people they know) more than they trust brands. So when hundreds or thousands of others speak positively about your product, it’s going to impact whether a consumer buys. Show those ratings clearly at the top of the page and link to top reviews so consumers don’t have to scroll for days to find them.
Optimizing Product Detail Pages for the Holidays
In addition to the above, don’t head into the holiday season without also addressing these aspects of your pages.
Prioritize Real-Time Order Visibility
There’s nothing worse for a consumer than finding the product they want and going to checkout only to find that it’s out of stock. Don’t let this happen. Especially for high-demand products, have some sort of icon that states how many are left in stock. This will also drive urgency to help motivate consumers to purchase right then.
Articulate Cutoff Dates Clearly
Speaking of driving clarity and urgency, make it obvious when consumers need to act in order to capitalize on holiday deals. Show when a sale ends or when the cutoff date is to get shipping in time for holidays.
Accommodate for Gifts and Returns
Return policies are always important factors for customers, but that is even more true during the holidays. Don’t make it a hunt to determine if a product can be returned. Similarly, ease any worries by showcasing gift options, receipts, discrete shipping, etc.
Test Performance
Your PDPs are going to be pushed to the limit during the holiday season. Test mobile performance, page-load times, and other aspects of reliability long before Black Friday and other major buying days.
Now’s the Time to Get Started
Holiday success begins with preparation in the summer. You have to start with the basics. The last 800 words should convince you that PDPs should be high on the list of priorities. And we’re here to make sure you don’t miss any aspects. Reach out to get started.
